2024 CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP

To meet the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language education around the world, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China. Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs/Chinese departments at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as Recommending Institutions) may recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers to further their studies in international Chinese language education and related programs at Chinese universities (hereinafter referred to as Host Institutions).

BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Non-Chinese Citizens.

Should be friendly to China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the school;

In good physical and mental conditions, and with a good record of academic performance and conduct

Aspires to take future careers in the teaching or promotion of Chinese language and culture in the Philippines.

Aged between16 and 35 (as of 1 September, 2024), with the special allowance for the age limit of 45 for applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers and that of 25 for undergraduate student applicants.

Excellent performer in HSK and HSKK tests. Certificate/s must not be older than 24 months on the day of the deadline.

Applicants must fulfill all of the above to be granted a qualifying interview with the Ateneo Confucius Institute Chinese Director.

SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS

CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHER PROGRAMME

Scholarship for Doctorate Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (DTCSOL)

Commences in September 2024 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years.

Applicants shall hold a Master’s degree in majors such as Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Linguistics, or Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test (Level 6), and 60 on the HSKK test (Advanced Level).

Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

 

Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

Commences in September 2024 and provides scholarship for a maximum of two academic years.

Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

 

Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)

Commences in September 2024 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years.

Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma and a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level4) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

 

SHORT-TERM ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Scholarship for One-Year Study PROGRAM

Commences in September 2024, and provides scholarship for a maximum of eleven months. International students who have benefited from similar scholarships are not eligible.

For the area of TCSOL, applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.

For the areas of Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy, etc., applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

For the area of Chinese Language Study, applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3).

Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

Scholarship for One-Semester Study PROGRAM

Commences either in September 2024 or March 2025, and provides scholarship of a maximum of five months. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

For the areas of TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy, etc.,applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.

For the area of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taiji Culture, applicants are required to provide HSK test scores. Priority will be given to applicants who also provide HSKK test scores.

Scholarship for Four-Week Study PROGRAM

Commences either in July or December, 2024, and provides a four-week scholarship. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

For the areas of Chinese Study, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taiji Culture, Chinese Language plus Home-Stay Experience in a Chinese Family, and Special Four-week Programme for Confucius Institutes, applicants are required to provide HSK test scores. The programme may be organized and applied for by a recommending institution with 10- 15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with host institutions and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for approval.

JOINT PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

Joint Program Scholarships are jointly funded by CLEC and educational departments, universities, or Host Institutions. Information on the admission methods, guidelines, and the number of scholarships will be available on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR ONLINE PROGRAMS

Online Programme for One-year Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. A general Chinese proficiency test score of 180 in HSK (Level 3) is required, and HSKK scores are preferred.

Online Programme for One-Semester Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. Generally, applicants must have an HSK score (no specific requirements for level or score).

For Special Online Study Programme, please consult the relevant host institutions for specific application requirements and methods of application.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

QUALIFYING INTERVIEW

All applicants must go through a qualifying interview. Express your intention to apply for the Confucius Institute Scholarship by sending an e-mail to info@ateneoconfucius.com. Attach scanned copies of your HSK and HSKK certificates, résumé, highest obtained diploma, latest academic transcript, valid passport, and an application essay written in Chinese 200-800 characters long. If your documents are in order, and you shall be scheduled for an interview with the Confucius Institute Chinese Director. Applicants outside Metro Manila may be interviewed online via WeChat video chat. Successful interviewees will be awarded a letter of recommendation. The interview will be conducted in Chinese.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Upon receipt of the recommendation letter, the applicant must open an account on http://cis.chinese.cn, and fill up the Confucius Institute Scholarship Online Application Form. They must fill up all the information and upload all the necessary documents.

POLICIES REGARDING IN-SERVICE CHINESE LANGUAGE
TEACHERS AND CHINESE BRIDGE WINNER

A.In-Service Chinese Language Teachers

In-service Chinese language teachers may be exempted from HSK/HSKK certificates if they provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.

B. Chinese Bridge Winners

       Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.

Certificate of Employment from your current school

Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

Applicants of the Scholarship for DTCSOL students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors or experts with equivalent professional and technical titles in relevant fields and a 3000-word personal statement in Chinese (including knowledge of the intended field of study and research proposal). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

If necessary, applicants may be contacted for additional documents or interviews.

The applicant must complete the online application by clicking on “Submit” and inform the Institute of the immediately of the submission. The Institute Director will provide signature of referee. No need to send hard copies to the Institute or to universities in China unless specifically requested.

THE APPLICATION DEADLINES FOR ONLINE APPLICATION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be based on HSK and HSKK levels and scores, geographical distribution, and other factors. The results will be published about three months before the program starts.

APPLICATION REVIEW UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Universities and the scholarship committee will assess the credentials of scholarship applicants and release the results two months before enrollment.

Please be patient as there are thousands of applicants competing for limited slots. Please refrain from contacting your preferred institutions about the results of the scholarship.

Successful applicants will be notified by the host institutions directly or through the Ateneo Confucius Institute. After confirming with the successful applicants, host institutions will mail the “Letter of Admission”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China” (JW202 Form), copy of the scholarship certificate, and other relevant documents to the recommending institutions.

CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE AND CRITERIA

The Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (four-week study students excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

TUITION FEE

The tuition fees are used by the host institution for the training and management of the scholarship students, the development of cultural activities and the organization of Chinese language proficiency tests. The scholarship online programs only support tuition fees.

ACCOMMODATIONS FEE

Accommodation fees are under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide students with in-campus apartments (usually double rooms). Students may also live off-campus upon application and getting permission from the host institutions. Students who live off campus are entitled to accommodation allowance of 1000 CNY per person/month for doctoral students and 700 CNY per person/month for other students paid on a monthly / quarterly basis from the host institutions.

ALLOWANCE

Living allowance is granted by host institutions on a monthly basis. The monthly allowance for undergraduates, one-academic-year study students and one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL students, the monthly allowance is 3,000 CNY per person. For DTCSOL students, the monthly allowance is 3500 CNY per person.

Students are required to complete enrollment procedures for every semester within stipulated period, otherwise their scholarship may be cancelled. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those who enroll after the 15th of that month are entitled to half of the amount.During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.For students who suspend study or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by the host institutions, allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out or when the decision of such punishment is announced.

The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by host institutions.

INSURANCE

Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institutions in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 160 CNY for four-week study students, 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students engaged in program longer than one academic year.
